European Tour Race to Dubai
 BMW Italian Open 2009 Terms of Competition
 
The Italian Open will be played according to the rules of the Royal & Ancient G.C. of St. Andrews, the rules of the PGA European Tour and local rules enacted by the Tournament Committee. The following players are eligible to play in the tournament: PGA European Tour temporary, partial and full member-professionals and amateurs with a 0 advantage or lower than 0 advantage; it will be held on 72 holes with a stroke-play formula. Ranks 1-65 professionals plus those coming equal 65th , and amateurs whose score is not higher than the one of rank 65th will attend the 3rd and 4th round. A match that ends all square should be played off hole by hole until one side wins.

Professional members of the following lists are eligible to play in the tournament:

1) Winners of the Open Championship from 1999 to 2008; winners of the Order of Merit of the European Tour from 1999 to 2008; winners of the U.S. Open, the U.S. PGA Championship and the U.S. Masters from 1999 to 2008

2) Winners of the PGA Championship (BMW Championship), of the Volvo Masters and of the Tournament Players Championship of the European Open from 2004 to 2008; winners of the Linde German Master 2004-2005.

2b) Winners of the WGC-Accenture Match play in 2006-2009, Bridgestone Invitational in 2006-2008, American Express Championship and the CA Championship in 2007-2008.

3) Winners of the tournaments of the European Tour 2006-2008, winners in 2009 of a tournament of the Race to Dubai with a money prize of 1.5 million Euros or higher.

3b) Winners in 2008 of the Open of St.Omer, winners of one tournament of the Race to Dubai in 2009 with a money prize of less than 1.5 million Euros.

4) Eight professionals invited, out of which at least two are members of the European Tour.

5) Eight professionals among the first 25 of the Italian Order of Merit at 31st December 2008.

6) Winners of the past editions of the Italian Open aged 50 or more.

7) Ranks 1-118 of the Order of Merit of the European Tour 2008.

8) Members of the last European team at the Ryder Cup.

9) Ranks 1-40 of the 2008 money list of career earnings.

10) Winners of three tournaments of the Challenge Tour in 2008.
10b) Ranks 1-10 of the Order of Merit of the Challenge Tour 2008.
10c) Winners of three tournaments of the Challenge tour in 2009.

11) Ranks 11-15 of the order of merit of the Challenge Tour 2008.
11b) Ranks 1-32 of the European Qualifying School 2008.
11c) Ranks 16-20 of the Order of Merit of the Challenge Tour 2008.

12) Ranks 119-151 included of the Order of Merit 2008 of the European Tour.

13) Winners of a tournament of the Challenge Tour in 2008 and 2009.
13b) Ranks 21-45 of the Order of Merit of the Challenge Tour 2008.

14) Ranks 33-73 of the European Qualifying School 2008.
